~ I’m the editor at www.foundationfairy.com. I am a makeup artist living in Vancouver, BC. I have over 10 years of
experience in the industry.
My favourite foundation makeup is NARS Sheer Matte Foundation. Having the ability to control excess oil is key when it come to selecting foundation for oily skin. NARS Sheer Matte Foundation is oil free and provides good coverage that controls oil. I only use a little bit of it on my clients and even then, the foundation is able to provide a great coverage. Most foundations will feel heavy during the day due to oil on the skin. However, this one feels light, almost as if you are not wearing anything at all.
For good results, be sure to properly clean and prep the face before application. Also, use a foundation brush to glide on the product! I highly recommend this product for anyone with oily skin.

I am a fan of Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup because it’s skincare for makeup. It gives the look of radiance to your skin. For oily skin I always reach for Jane Iredale Pure Pressed Base SPF 20 because it gives a semi-matte finish. If you like a sheer to medium coverage I like to use a powder brush. But if you prefer a medium to full coverage I like to use a Beauty Blender. Another great thing about this product that has made me fall in love with it is that it’s water resistant for 40 minutes after being in the water.

As a makeup artist with 10 years experience and a woman with oily skin I have tried everything on the market and found not only the best foundation for oily skin, but also the best primer.
The first step in getting your foundation to stay put all day is skin preparation. After washing, toning, and moisturizing your skin take a minute to let the products sink in. This is when I drink my first cup of coffee.
After 15 minutes the moisturizer has had time to sink into the skin and is no longer sitting on top. Even ladies with oily skin need to use moisturizer and finding the right one can balance the skin and mitigate the oil issue over time.
The second step is primer. Skindinavia has a spray bottle of oil control primer called The Makeup Primer Spray that I love. Once the primer has been sprayed in a T over the T-Zone and an X over the rest of the face I let it dry for 2-3 minutes. Time for a coffee refill.
I then apply the foundation. Marsk Mineral Foundation is my favorite for oily skin. The Marsk foundation has variable coverage and you can dab a bit on a concealer brush to cover any blemishes before applying the foundation. The foundation is easy to use and does not require a lot of blending. I use a kabuki brush to apply two layers to the T-Zone and lightly brush over the rest of the face.

Here is my favorite: Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup. This product literally lasts for 15 hours and keeps you looking fresh and natural through the heat and humidity. Additionally, it’s oil-free, shine-free and is a buildable formula, which I love. However, no matter what type of foundation you wear if you have oily skin, it really is all about how you prep your skin before the application that will keep the oil at bay. Invest in a quality primer (I love Laura Mercier’s oil-free primer).
